O'Neil was a contestant on Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while at high school. She made it to the top 100 round because the judges were thrilled with her performance. O'Neil was given high marks from jury. However, she suffered significant defeats during the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up on the third row, followed by the second place. They were stunned by the results and encouraged fans to vote for singers with impressive singing skills similar to Melissa. O'Neil, who had been always delivering top performance since then, never fell below the top three. The performance she gave on the 7th September of 2005 was awe-inspiring that judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
